Sock thoughts

Ok, I’m knitting with Zitron’s Trekking color 108, which is this one:

Trekking 108

In a “Rope Ladder” sock pattern originally from Joslyn’s Fiber Farm’s sock of the month club back in 2003 (good grief, it’s been that long?  And I never made that sock then either…) with the kit for the original shown HERE.   The sock picture is hard to see, but here it is:

Rope Ladder Sock

My leg is bigger than the pattern, and I know these one ball wonders often are less than what’s needed for big feet, so I’m thinking I’ll switch to something else for the toes, or the ball of the foot on, to be sure I have enough.  I’ll have to rummage and see what I’ve got that works, but I’m sure there’s something.

I think I’ll do the sock pattern only as far as the heel, and not continue it on to the top of the foot, both for ease of knitting — my fingers will be glad to change to stockinet by then, and for the comfort of my foot.

I’m wondering about doing an eye of a peacock heel on this one.  I’ve never done it before, so for practice it wouldn’t be bad to do it on color changing yarn.  Will it show at all though?  I know, I know, it’s the heel of my sock.  How many people are going to look at it anyway?  I’ve wanted to try doing it, but in some ways I’d like it to show a bit.  Anyone have any clue?

Sock, Stash, etc

I started a sock today out of Trecking yarn, and had to yank out a gob and a half of yarn to get the center pull started — which got my brain started trying to figure out what the word was that Wendy (of WendyKnits ) had coined, ages ago — gob-something or other, for when that happens.  I tried to find it, but with no luck.  While looking at her site, I ran in to her buttons for Knit From Your Stash.

You know.  I’ve cut way down on my yarn buying.  I haven’t bought any this year, although that’s as much by chance as planning.  But I’ve got a hell of a lot of yarn already.  If I make it a project, that’s even more incentive.  I swiped a button to add here.  I’m probably going to stick it in the blogs section, cause I’m having a very tired day and not ready to fuss with much more than that, but I think I might jump on that band wagon.

I’m pretty pleased to have started the sock.  I’m still proceeding slowly on the Dr Who scarf, but it’s heavy and it makes my hands tired.  I’m tracking how things I do effect when my body hurts and feels tired these days, in prep for seeing a pain doctor — I suspect I may have Fibromyalgia, but I’m waiting for the doctor’s official stamp.  The sock is light weight and feels like my fingers are working instead of my hands and arms.  It’s a “rope ladder” pattern, which sounds like a run in a stocking to me, but is actually a sort of barred ribbing.  When I have more than 1/3 of an inch done I’ll see about posting a picture.

I worked on the sock today while hanging out at the edge of the creek, as emergency back up person, while Spouse fished out our creek pump to rinse the mud out of it and set it up to run for summer watering.  It runs, but for some reason water isn’t making it all the way up to the holding tank by the house.  He’s just gone out to shut the system down again.  So much for garden watering tonight. [UPDATE! The timer had shut itself off, now that it’s upset the pump is pumping and water is here, we’ll water after all!  Phew.] He’s also transplanted three small blueberries today that weren’t getting as much care where they were planted as they should have.  And we dyed eggs as a family to take to a larger family gathering tomorrow.

I googled for patterns for a knitted Easter egg, but to no avail.  I’m not quite ready to create one yet, but I liked the idea.

Quilt Square Comments,

I’ve got the Identicon  plugin for my comments, although installing it was a bit trickier than described.  The code one was supposed to put in wasn’t quite right, and the folder it had to go in wasn’t WP Identicon, it was just Identicon, despite being labeled the former.  They don’t call them quilt squares, the call them geometric shapes.

I’ve managed to knit a little more on this dang scarf.  It could have been a lot more if I’d spent more time not driving.  My quiet Monday got spent at the hardware, grocery and honey suppliers store (picking up wholesale internet business supplies, not honey things unfortunately).  Tuesday was quieter, with only a trip back to the grocery and honey suppliers.  Wednesday morning was supposed to be full and was.  Thursday.  You know.  I think it went to errands too, but I can’t remember now — checking in to kid swimming lessons and music stuff maybe.  Trying to find out whether my palm pilot is dying or just ill.  Stuff like that.  Friday I volunteer in kindergarten, but they had a birthday thing at the end, so I escaped at the end!

I might be almost done with the current tan section!  It’s at least time to count rows again.  Then if I’m lucky I move on to some color I like better than tan.  At least I’ve managed to knit without looking at it much.

I still haven’t managed to update Wordpress, although maybe that will happen this weekend.  I’ve now got the program that the person who houses the server will permit through his security system.  It’s just a matter of sitting at the computer when I’m not feeling beat with a stick.  Then there’s the tree planting, firewood cutting, garden work, getting some hay for the rest of spring, finding some time to clean the barn — and I do the lightest parts of all this!  The way my joints ache after even that I’m beginning to wonder if I need to check in with an MD.  I didn’t think knees and hips were supposed to give out at 39.  My back is a given — it began to give out before age 25.  But the rest had been ok until recently.  Or at least much more ok.

Four Rows

Four Rows Yup, I knit four whole rows on the Dr Who scarf today. It wasn’t bad going, I just didn’t have a lot of time to knit. It frustrates me how slowly it’s going, even though I can see the reason why.

I need to get out my tape measure and find out how long it is. This short version will be a little over eight feet when done. I keep hoping I’ve hit the half way mark, but I don’t really think I have. Which is why I haven’t measured it yet.
I also need to quickly steam block the two hats that I did for the same charity, so I can get them in the mail. They sat for better than two months waiting for me to do pompom’s for the top, which I finally managed this weekend. I know I made pompom cat toys as a child, and I thought that involved wrapping the yarn around my fingers or something. This pattern had me cut out two cardboard donut shapes — which worked very well. It just frustrates me to know I’ve done it before — all be it 30 years ago — and not be able to work out how I did it then!

On the Needles

I offered to knit something for a science fiction charity. I didn’t specify what I’d knit — although I suggested “a hat” or some other smallish things. The person who won my item chose a Dr Who Scarf.

If you’ve never encountered one, you can see one of the dang things here Dr Who Season 12. This is the one in particular I’m working on, except the person who won it, being smaller and not in need of a scarf that will trail behind her everywhere she goes wanted it shorter, but with nothing left out. I consulted with Spouse, who was at one time a Dr Who fan, and in the end we cut the repetitions for each color in half.

Still the thing will be better than eight feet long, and is sixty stitches wide. It’s garter stitch so it’s as mindless as it can be, but after eight bumps, my hands are ready to give out. My right hand was injured most of a year ago, and doesn’t bother me a lot now, but I’m pretty careful of it too, so when my hands start to get tired, I stop.

The worst of it is: I want to knit lace! Or even quick chunky hats. Anything that’s not long and bulky and in colors I’m not real pleased by.

I’ll take a picture at some point. I’m getting close to four feet along I think. I will be so pleased when it’s D O N E!

The next time I offer to knit for charity, I’ll frame my offer very specifically!

Slowly Slowly Slowly said the Sloth

I’m still here, I’m still knitting, with luck I’ll be blogging again. And in time this will look a lot like it did before. I’m using Wordpress on my spouse’s server, and he’s worked out how to customize the look of it a lot already, but applying it to my stuff is tricky business. :-)

Does this thing not say who I am anywhere?  Stonering!  Spouse says we can put my blog button back when we redo the layout.  Maybe I should change the tagline to Slowly Slowly Slowly like this post title!
